March 10, 2009: "The Final Insult"

And that, folks, is how my Panama Adventure ended. Very Lewis Black-like. I'll spare you the night spent in the Miami International Airport, as nothing really happened there apart from the discovery that the abbreviation MIA is very fitting. And from now on, I'll get back to the 3-to-4-panel strips. Which will hopefully allow me to post several per week once again and work on getting caught up. Thanks for hanging in there with me!

Another strip that took absolutely forever for me to finish. One thing I couldn't find a way to include was my frustration and alienation over not being able to speak a lick of Spanish. I'll know better before I travel overseas again. In the end though, I did get some level of compensation from American for their utter idiocy.

I hope to have the final Panama strip up early next week. That's right, there's yet another misadventure waiting before I escape the country. Stay tuned!

Some sketches in the meantime...

Last week was pretty hectic with my latest show opening and all, but
this week I'm endeavoring to get back on the comic bandwagon. Of course, the comic I'm working on now is pretty big (again) so it's taking me some time to draw it. I hope to have it up by Thursday. In the meantime, since we're finishing up the Panama story, here are some more sketches from my travel book. The big one is a composite of the plant drawings I made (as referenced in the last strip).

March 9, 2009: "On My Own"

This will likely be the only comic for this week. I'm in tech all this week for my next show: The Tempest, which opens Friday. I'll post more details tomorrow. But rest assured that this is the last comic about Panama. The next several will be about my ordeal trying to get home from Panama. :)

March 8, 2009: "Parenting Lessons"

Wow. Two and a half weeks between comic strips. That's not good. The simple truth is that life has gotten in the way: a new work environment that's less friendly to artistic endeavors, plus a lot of rehearsing for my latest play, and trying to buff up my design chops in an effort to get more freelance work. I'm trying to teach myself Adobe Illustrator. Have you ever tried to do that? It's friggin' hard! Illustrator is the least intuitive program around. On the good side, though, more stuff in my life means more material for comics... eventually.

This weekend I'll try to crank out another strip. I enjoy doing these detailed environments and all, but I can't wait to get back to simple three-panel layouts with only two characters and implied backgrounds. Oh, the simple life!

Also, just a friendly reminder that every dollar you donate with the little Paypal button on the left is one less dollar I have to make through traditional day-job means and the more time I can spend bringing you comics on a more regular basis. Jus' saying. :)

Sorry I've been MIA recently. It has a lot to do with losing my job, finding a new one, rehearsals for my next show, and being very sick recently. Please forgive me. I'll try to make it up to you soon.

Wow. I forgot just how long it takes to color something like this. Thus the obvious 6-hour delay from my morning deadline. Sorry 'bout that.

March 6, 2009: "An Actor's Life"

As promised.

So I read the second volume of Bryan Lee O'Mally's Scott Pilgrim series. People apparently love it. I can't say I do. Maybe it's just because I can't tell what's going on in all those love triangles when every single girl in this book looks exactly the same! Guess I'll go back to my Batman comics, thanks all the same.

March 4, 2009: "Visitor's Scam"

I had a very laid-back and enjoyable Memorial Day/birthday weekend, which is my sole excuse for having no comic yesterday. I hope to have one for you tomorrow, and then I'm off to visit my family for a long weekend. Since I didn't get to visit them over Christmas, this visit is a necessity.

In the meantime, if you are in Chicago I cannot recommend highly enough that you see "Static," an audio play/tour by the Sanculottes company. It's part ghost story, part tragedy, part mystery. It runs for another two weeks (it's been extended by a week) and I have to say I loved it. It's one of the few things I've experienced that kept me thinking and pondering for hours after the fact. And it's only $10! Make it happen!

March 4, 2009: "Wedding Planning"

Next week, we'll leave the country and get to Panama itself. Til then, have a happy Memorial Day weekend. Plus, it's my birthday tomorrow, so send me love!

P.S. In case anyone is confused, James is also an ordained holy man now and can officiate weddings.
